Here at Hawkinson Nissan we are always to be impressed by Nissan's ability to give to back to communities across the country. In recent times, Nissan started a program focused on constructing eco-friendly houses for people in need within the United States. The first energy-efficient home will be built in the Atlanta, Georgia region and will be funded by a grant. Volunteers from Nissan and Southern Crescent Habitat, an offshoot of Habitat for Humanity, will lend a hand in the construction process.
Nissan and Habitat's sustainable building initiative plan to construct 9 other eco-friendly homes. After each home is built it will be ENERGY STAR 3.0 certified. In terms of the ENERGY STAR rating system a 3.0 is a remarkable achievement.
So who is the lucky person to own this energy-efficient house? Kenya Bouie, is the fortunate recipient of this green home. Ms. Bouie is a single mother who has two children. She worked together with the crew of volunteer workers and assisted in the construction her new home.
Reflecting on her journey toward becoming a proud homeowner, Keya indicates she learned a lot of valuable lessons. One: She is not alone in her housing struggle. Another, she says is "I learned what should be done in a home when something happens, how to fix it without having to spend money (to be) cost efficient and it helps me be independent."1
This touching story is just one of many made possible by Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit which Nissan has been partnering with for seven years now, contributing, money, manpower and vehicles.
